ICBC executed a 10 million yuan cross-border digital yuan settlement via CBETS, cutting settlement time from days to hours. The transaction signals growing adoption of China's digital currency infrastructure for commercial trade.
ICBC executed the first cross-border digital yuan transaction using the CBETS platform, settling 10 million yuan for ocean freight charges between a Chinese importer and a Singapore recipient in a single day, the bank said.
The transaction bypassed the multi-bank correspondent network, cutting settlement time from days to hours and eliminating currency conversion steps, ICBC said. The importing firm, which regularly pays for raw material shipments, received the funds through the Singapore recipient within the same day.
CBETS, or the Cross-Border E-CNY Settlement System, operates under the Digital RMB International Operation Center. The platform was upgraded through 2026 to merge international payment rails, distributed ledger technology, and digital asset management into one system, officials said. Overseas banks access it through a Hong Kong gateway, using a single integration point for traditional banking, blockchain networks, and the ISO 20022 messaging standard.
On June 16, 2026, the International Operation Center formalized partnerships with 26 organizations, including ICBC Asia, Bank of China Hong Kong, and Standard Chartered China. The platform supports QR code payments, remittances, and commercial settlements, and it can handle both centralized and distributed ledger methods.
Starting January 1, 2026, Chinese regulators authorized financial institutions to offer interest-bearing accounts for authenticated digital yuan holdings. International pilot programs expanded into Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
ICBC has also rolled out the Hu e Hui remittance service using the multilateral CBDC bridge, which cut transfer times from 60 minutes to about five minutes, the bank said. The bank processed a 220 million yuan transfer to Hong Kong through the same bridge. ICBC plans to deploy standardized settlement solutions for e-commerce, offshore trading, commodity finance, and transport payments.
The transaction reinforces the digital yuan's push into global trade settlement. For broader context on digital currency infrastructure, see AlphaScala's crypto market analysis.
