Bank charged you incorrectly or failed to reverse a debit? File a complaint with your bank first, then escalate to RBI's ombudsman within 90 days. Most cases resolved in a month.
If your bank charges an incorrect fee or fails to reverse an unauthorised debit, you have a formal route to seek redress. Every regulated financial entity in India must follow the Reserve Bank of India's grievance redressal process, which ultimately lets customers escalate to the central bank's Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
The first step is a written complaint to the bank or NBFC. Wait for a response. If the bank does not reply within 30 days, or if you are unhappy with the reply, you can move to the RBI's complaint management system.
Log on to the portal, click "file a complaint", select the entity category (bank, NBFC, payment system participant, or credit information company), then the specific institution. An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number, which becomes your permanent login for tracking. Fill in contact details, transaction information, and the relief you are seeking. Upload the earlier complaint, the bank's reply, KYC documents, and any proof.
You will receive an SMS and email with a unique complaint reference number (CRN). Save it. You have 90 days from the date of the bank's response to file with the ombudsman. If the bank never replied, the 90-day clock starts 30 days after you filed the original complaint. Complaints filed later may be marked non-maintainable, according to a report by GoCredit.
The RBI forwards your complaint to the bank for a reply. If the bank's response is unsatisfactory or missing, the ombudsman can take up the matter. In many cases, the RBI facilitates a settlement between customer and bank.
Most complaints are resolved in about a month, the portal shows. If the ombudsman issues an award in your favour, the bank must comply once you provide a written acceptance within 30 days.
