Marketing claims about instant settlement depend on the specific infrastructure supporting a transaction. They are not a universal feature of OTC trading.
Institutional OTC pricing often depends on access to liquidity across several venues rather than the depth of one exchange. A desk may compare executable prices across centralized exchanges, market makers, and other liquidity sources, then manage the risk created by the client trade across that network.
Doing this well requires more than connecting to multiple APIs. A serious operation needs real-time market data, pricing logic, inventory controls, venue risk limits, execution systems, and monitoring that can continue functioning during periods of volatility.
The technical objective is not simply to find the lowest displayed ask or highest displayed bid. Large trades have to be evaluated against available size, fees, latency, expected market impact, and the risk that the market moves while the desk is executing or hedging.

For institutions, compliance depth is not just a box to check after evaluating price. It is part of counterparty quality.
The strongest evaluation questions are usually operational rather than promotional. How is the quote constructed for a large order? What happens if market conditions change before the hedge is complete? Which venues and liquidity sources are available for the relevant assets? What settlement timelines apply to each fiat currency? Which trades require prefunding, and when can credit be extended? How are assets and client funds handled during settlement? Which legal entity is the counterparty, and which regulatory framework applies?
Answers to those questions reveal much more than a headline spread.
The institutional OTC market has matured because the problem itself has become broader. Large trades still need discreet execution. Serious counterparties are now expected to combine pricing, liquidity access, settlement, risk management, and compliance into one operational system.
