India's food regulator sent 150 notices to packaged-food companies for misleading ads and labelling violations, and issued more than 20 notices to five-star hotels over calorie-disclosure rules, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said.
The enforcement action, detailed in an Instagram post Saturday, covers some of the country's biggest food and beverage brands. Nestle India, Mondelez India, Coca-Cola India, PepsiCo India, Danone India and Abbott India were among those cited for what FSSAI called "misleading ads, false claims and labelling non-compliances." Beverage makers Red Bull India, Hell Energy and Monster Energy India also received notices, as did alcohol producers Diageo, Pernod Ricard and Ferrero India.
Products were seized from PepsiCo, Red Bull India, Kenvue, Monster Energy India, Diageo and Pernod Ricard, the regulator said. The action follows FSSAI's directive for beverage companies to remove "energy drinks" descriptors from product labels. The authority also recently pulled up alcohol players over added flavours in rum and whisky.
Twelve notices went to quick-commerce platforms Amazon Now and Flipkart Minutes. One license for an Amazon warehouse was cancelled, FSSAI said.
On the food-service side, the regulator sent notices to major international hotel operators including Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Radisson, Four Seasons and Shangri-La for failing to declare calorie counts and comply with menu-labelling rules.
More than 30 notices were issued to restaurant chains including KFC, Domino's, Pizza Hut, McDonald's and Costa Coffee. Licenses for five Domino's outlets were suspended. FSSAI also flagged 58 imported products for labelling non-compliances.
The crackdown signals a broader push by FSSAI to enforce compliance across India's food supply chain, from packaged goods to fine dining.
