Airtel Payments Bank, with 121 million monthly active users, names Shabnam Sinha as chairperson effective Oct 1, 2026, replacing founder Sunil Mittal.
Shabnam Sinha will succeed Sunil Mittal as chairperson of Airtel Payments Bank from October 1, 2026, according to a filing by parent Bharti Airtel on Monday.
Mittal will step down as non-executive chairman and leave the board on September 30, 2026. He had chaired the bank since its creation in April 2016. Under his leadership, the bank became India's largest payments bank by revenue, the filing said, serving both consumer and enterprise customers.
The bank now has more than 121 million monthly active users and nearly 30 million bank account customers, supported by a network of over 500,000 banking points that reach three out of four villages across the country, the company said. It is the nation's second-largest mobile bank and UPI Autopay player.
Sinha, currently an independent director on the board, was appointed by the board with the Reserve Bank of India's approval. She chairs the Special Committee for Monitoring Frauds and serves on the Risk Management and Information Technology committees.
Her career spans three decades in financial services, public policy, and development finance. She leads the World Bank's India program for school education and skills, including the STARS project under the Samagra Shiksha program. Earlier roles include senior program advisor for education at USAID in New Delhi and work at the National Council of Educational Research and Training, where she focused on curriculum and textbook development.
Before her World Bank tenure, Sinha served as CEO of PPP Education at a large private-sector firm. She has advised governments across Asia, Africa, and Europe on governance, operational effectiveness, and risk management.
Her three-year term as chairperson begins October 1, 2026.
