Delhi-NCR Rain: Orange Alert Out, Red for Some Parts as Downpour Hits

Heavy rain hit Delhi and NCR early Thursday, snapping a stretch of humid weather and flooding low-lying roads across the region. The India Meteorological Department issued an Orange Alert for Delhi and a Red Alert for parts of NCR, with 180-250 mm of rain forecast over the next 24 hours.

Waterlogging snarled the morning commute in several areas as drains overflowed and key arterial roads slowed to a crawl. The worst-hit spots included parts of south and east Delhi, where residents reported knee-deep water on side streets. No major structural damage or casualties were reported in the early hours.

The IMD forecast shows continued heavy showers and thunderstorms through at least July 11, with the core of the system likely to shift eastward by Sunday. The Red Alert for some NCR districts signals a higher risk of flooding and disruption in those zones. Officials advised residents to stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel during peak downpour hours.

The Orange Alert for Delhi itself covers a threat level below the Red but still carries warnings for localised flooding, traffic delays, and power outages. The IMD expects rainfall intensity to ease from July 12 onward. Commuters heading out Friday and Saturday should expect more delays.
