Total value locked across DeFi protocols jumped 9.15% to $83.2 billion on Aug. 20, with spot DEX volume topping $10 billion for the first time since early June. Hyperliquid dominated perpetual futures with $15.2 billion in 24-hour volume.
Decentralized finance markets logged a sharp uptick Thursday as total value locked jumped 9.15% in 24 hours and spot DEX volume pushed above $10 billion for the first time since early June.
Defillama data at about 10:30 a.m. EDT on Aug. 20 showed $83.216 billion parked across DeFi protocols, up from the prior day. DEX spot volume hit $10.886 billion. Decentralized perpetual futures platforms handled $36.72 billion. The stablecoin market cap stood at $301.502 billion, well below the 2026 highs.
Uniswap processed roughly $3.1 billion to $3.4 billion across its deployments in the latest 24-hour window. PancakeSwap followed near $1.2 billion, with Pump, Aerodrome, BisonFi and Orca adding to the tally.
Solana led spot DEX activity over the 24-hour, seven-day and 30-day periods measured by Defillama. BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum and Base followed, showing decentralized trading is no longer tied to the Ethereum network that once dominated DeFi.
The trading burst came alongside a broader crypto rally. Bitcoin traded between $71,500 and $72,000 on Aug. 20. Ethereum and other DeFi coins posted larger percentage gains. Bigger price swings gave traders room for momentum trades, arbitrage and leveraged bets.
Hyperliquid was the standout in perpetual futures, contracts with no expiration date. Defillama showed the platform processing $15.205 billion in the last 24 hours, $41.445 billion over seven days and $184.906 billion over 30 days. Cumulative perpetual volume has reached $5.092 trillion, with open interest near $11.94 billion. Hyperliquid typically controls roughly 45% of all decentralized perpetual futures volume. Its HYPE token climbed into the low-to-mid $70 range as trading intensified.
The summer had been quiet. Crypto prices chopped sideways, speculative appetite dried up and liquidity thinned across many smaller tokens. The Aug. 20 print broke that pattern. Whether spot DEX volume holds near $10 billion in the coming days will tell if the move has legs.
