Coinbase received a license from Abu Dhabi Global Market's financial regulator to operate a tokenization hub for securities, the exchange said.
The Financial Services Permission, granted by the ADGM's Financial Services Regulatory Authority, lets Coinbase arrange investment deals and provide custody for tokenized securities. These are digital representations of shares backed by underlying equities and carrying verified shareholder rights including dividends and voting rights.
ADGM created its digital asset framework in 2018, one of the first financial centers to formally regulate tokenized assets. The framework treats tokenized equities as securities, not a separate category. That means they exist in both the traditional finance and crypto worlds.
The UAE has been courting crypto firms. Coinbase also plans a global derivatives hub in Dubai, signaling broader ambitions in the region beyond tokenization.
Coinbase's approach in Abu Dhabi targets institutional investors. Rather than setting up complex brokerage relationships across multiple jurisdictions, an institution would need only a digital wallet to access tokenized securities, the company said.
Coinbase said it will focus on tokenized equities initially. No specific tokens or protocols have been disclosed. The license is specific to tokenized securities, not a general crypto trading permission, positioning Coinbase as a capital markets infrastructure provider in Abu Dhabi.
