Coinbase users can now let an AI agent connect to their account and trade on their behalf, the company said Thursday. The new Coinbase for Agents tool gives a user-selected AI agent full context on the user's holdings and the ability to execute trades, payments, and other workflows without direct human input at each step.
Crypto spot and derivatives trading went live with the launch, according to a Coinbase blog post. The company said it plans to add stock and index fund trading, prediction markets, and commodities, effectively making everything available on Coinbase available to the agent.
The release suggested a few use cases: rebalancing a portfolio over months by exploiting short-term price moves, monitoring a cash balance around the clock and shifting idle funds into yield, and – once the system is x402-enabled – paying for premium data and services automatically.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong told investors during an earnings call in May that the company believes AI agents will soon become major economic participants, executing payments and transactions online autonomously. "We believe there will soon be billions of agents transacting and they need rails that can keep up, and Coinbase is at the center of the agent economy," he said. He noted that over 90% of on-chain agentic stablecoin transaction volume already runs on the company's Base network.
The announcement frames the tool as a response to a broader shift in how people interact with the internet. "People are increasingly moving through the world via agents rather than apps – and businesses are rapidly rebuilding their products to be agent-first in turn," Coinbase wrote. "As that ecosystem grows, Coinbase for Agents is positioned to be your trading and spending account at the center of it."
The move builds on Coinbase Advisor, an AI-powered financial management feature added in December that answers questions like "What's the latest market news and how does it impact me?" and "Build me a portfolio." The new tool extends the same logic from advice to execution, effectively turning the account into an API endpoint for any AI agent a user chooses to authorize.
