Thune's comments were the first public signal from Republican leadership since an ethics dispute slowed the bill's progress. The dispute appeared to be nearing resolution, traders said.
The CLARITY Act would split oversight of digital assets between the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The CFTC would take primary authority over crypto spot markets, while the SEC would retain jurisdiction over tokens it deems securities. The bill passed the House with bipartisan support earlier this year.
