Morgan Stanley raised Chevron's price target to $218, above its all-time high, as the integrated major's cost cuts and Hess deal offer catch-up potential versus surging refiners.
Morgan Stanley raised its price target on Chevron (CVX) to $218 a share on Aug. 19, a level above the stock's all-time high of just under $215 hit earlier in 2026. The firm kept an Overweight rating, implying roughly 6% upside from where shares traded before the note.
The call comes as Chevron has already rallied more than 35% year to date, lifted by high crude prices and the strongest quarterly profit in at least six years. But the gains have lagged those of pure-play refiners. Valero Energy (VLO) and Marathon Petroleum have each more than doubled over the same stretch, so Morgan Stanley sees room for the integrated majors to catch up.
Chevron's cost-cutting program is on track to deliver $3 billion to $4 billion in structural savings by year-end. The company also expects shale production costs to fall 25% per barrel year over year in 2026 through efficiency gains. The $53 billion acquisition of Hess gives Chevron access to more than 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent in Guyana's Stabroek block, though its stake is only 30% and non-operating.
The stock has another factor working in its favor: hedge fund interest. Chevron ended the first quarter with 103 hedge fund holders, up from 86 in the prior quarter, with total investment value exceeding $29.6 billion.
Risks remain. A peace agreement that restores Middle East supply could push oil prices lower, squeezing upstream earnings and refining margins. In a prolonged low-price environment, the Hess deal's long-term value would also shrink, and Chevron's non-operating role in Guyana limits its control over project timing.
Even with those caveats, Morgan Stanley's new target suggests the stock can surpass its prior peak. The next catalyst is the pace of cost reduction and how second-half earnings absorb any shift in crude prices.
