Brazil Central Bank's Crypto Alert System Targets Cyber Threats

Brazil's central bank will integrate a crypto threat alert system with exchanges and banks within two weeks, following a $180M cyber heist. New controls include a 24-hour hold on transfers over $10,000.

The Central Bank of Brazil is rolling out a threat-alert system designed to flag cyberattacks that use cryptocurrency as an exit rail, according to Valor Economico. The system, built with Hypernative, a firm that monitors digital-asset threats, has already been tested with unnamed market participants. Integration with banks and crypto exchanges begins within two weeks, Regina Pedroso, executive director of the Brazilian Tokenization Association, told Valor.

Pedroso said the main concern is maintaining fund traceability when money leaves traditional finance and enters the crypto sector. The working group behind the tool formed last year after a $180 million cyber heist in July 2025, when criminals exploited a vulnerability in middleware company C&M and cashed out part of the proceeds via bitcoin and USDT on exchanges. Rocelo Lopes, CEO of Smartpay, criticized the lack of guardrails at the time.

"The challenge now is to implement the tool. It has already been tested by the Central Bank, some bulletins have already been issued, and now associations have to adapt to receive and distribute the alert," Pedroso said.

Foxbit and Mercado Bitcoin, two national crypto institutions, are part of the group adopting the system. The new controls include a precautionary 24-hour retention of funds exceeding $10,000 for an individual or aggregate daily transactions, the report said.
