
CoinRabbit and ChangeNOW report challenges crypto's transparency-as-default model, arguing privacy tools protect investors from extortion without blocking law enforcement.
A new report from CoinRabbit and ChangeNOW pushes back against the idea that financial privacy and regulatory compliance are a zero-sum game. The report, presented by Decrypt, argues that the default transparency of public blockchains introduces real operational and physical risks for both corporate and individual users. Privacy tools can protect legitimate users without blocking law enforcement, the report says.
The transparency of public ledgers means anyone with an internet connection can track a wallet's full transaction history, counterparty connections, and balance. For companies, that creates unusual exposure. Citing Statista data, the report notes that 36% of corporate board members now see internal data leaks as their top operational threat, with average breach costs at $4.44 million. On a public blockchain, a competitor could watch a corporate wallet to infer profit margins, supplier terms, or payroll timing.
For individual investors, the problem is more immediate. Wallet balances act as a public net-worth registry. "Public blockchain transparency lets anyone audit your net worth in real time, turning private wealth into public information," said Walter Barrett, chief strategy and growth officer at CoinRabbit.
CoinRabbit's own survey found that nearly half of high-net-worth clients faced targeted social engineering over the past three years, directly linked to visible wallet balances.
CertiK recorded 52 verified physical extortion attacks, sometimes called "wrench attacks," in the first half of 2026 alone. Those attacks resulted in $124.1 million in stolen assets.
The report acknowledges that crypto does attract illicit activity. TRM Labs estimated total illicit inflows at $158 billion in 2025, with 84% routed through stablecoin networks. Raw ledger visibility is rarely what solves those cases. Enforcement works through centralized checkpoints: exchange KYC databases, court subpoenas, stablecoin issuer blacklists, and fiat off-ramps.
"Successful blockchain investigations rely on the combination of onchain analysis, behavioral patterns, KYC information, exchange cooperation, stablecoin issuer interventions, and traditional investigative methods," said Albert Quehenberger, founder of AQ Forensics. "In practice, attribution is achieved by connecting multiple sources of evidence rather than relying on blockchain transparency alone."
Because investigators operate at those regulated gateways, the report argues that privacy tools can shield legitimate activity without dismantling the apparatus that authorities use to pursue crime. The finding adds a new dimension to the crypto market analysis debate about how blockchain design balances transparency against user safety.
The study concludes by calling for a shift in Web3 design: away from mandatory public exposure and toward selective, permissioned disclosure.
"The privacy debate starts from the wrong assumption that ordinary users must prove they have nothing to hide by exposing everything," said Pauline Shangett, chief strategy officer at ChangeNOW. "That is not how any mature financial system works."
