Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says tokenization of stocks and AI agents could multiply on-chain activity 10x to 100x, rewriting protocol revenue math.
Bitwise Asset Management Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan expects blockchain transaction volumes could expand 100-fold as tokenization of traditional assets and autonomous AI agents reshape on-chain activity, he wrote in an investment note.
Hougan said many investors size the market based on current crypto trading volumes and payment flows. That approach misses structural shifts underway, he argued.
One driver is the migration of conventional financial instruments onto blockchain networks. Once equities and bonds are tokenized, they can trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Standard US equity markets operate about 33 hours a week during regular sessions. Tokenized versions of those same stocks would be available for 168 hours, a fivefold increase in trading time. Hougan wrote that expanded trading windows alone would naturally support higher transaction counts.
A second force is autonomous AI agents. These software systems monitor portfolios and execute trades without human intervention. Hougan asked how much more frequently such agents might transact compared to humans. The multiplier could be two times, ten times, or higher.
Combining extended market hours with machine-driven activity makes a tenfold increase in stock transaction volumes readily achievable, Hougan wrote, with increases of 50 times or 100 times remaining plausible.
Similar dynamics apply to payments and other financial activity where AI-driven processes could generate substantially greater volumes than today's human-centric systems. Many blockchain networks earn revenue from transaction fees or related metrics. A surge of this magnitude could translate into higher protocol earnings even if per-transaction fees compress as scale rises, Hougan said.
Hougan's broader note also addressed other investor errors. He said many underestimate the addressable market for crypto applications because tokenization brings trillions in traditional assets on-chain. He also warned against overestimating the competitive advantage of traditional finance incumbents relative to established crypto-native platforms.
Hougan acknowledged that expanded trading windows alone may not produce proportional volume growth. The combination of tokenization and AI automation, he said, positions blockchain networks for substantially elevated activity levels. Investors who extrapolate from present-day figures risk missing the opportunity, he said.
