Binance withdrew its MiCA application in Greece. The exchange faces a July 2026 EU deadline and said another member state application is coming.
Binance withdrew its application for a license under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation in Greece, the exchange said in a post on X.
The decision came "after careful consideration of the current status and timeline of the Greek process, with our users' interest at the center," Binance said. Europe remains an important market and the company's ambitions are unchanged, it said. Binance expects to gain a license in another EU member state in the coming months.
The EU's MiCA regulation set a July 1, 2026 compliance deadline for crypto-asset service providers. Binance said it will take "necessary steps" that will affect some users ahead of that date.
Earlier reports said Greek officials faced pressure not to approve Binance under MiCA. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde allegedly told Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis that Binance was not welcome in Europe, according to those reports. Lagarde holds influence over EU financial policy. Blocking a compliant applicant would be unusual, the reports noted.
The withdrawal renews questions about Binance's EU licensing strategy. Under MiCA, a license in one member state grants a passport to operate across the bloc. Binance's statement that another application is in progress suggests the company is shifting its registration venue rather than exiting the EU. The situation echoes Binance's EU exit risk flagged in earlier reporting.
For traders, the next milestone is the announcement of Binance's application in another EU country. A successful approval before the 2026 deadline would confirm the Greece withdrawal was a venue change. A failure to secure an alternative license would increase the risk of an EU-wide licensing gap.
The company's statement about being "confident in our future in Europe" and working with regulators leaves room for multiple outcomes. The July 2026 deadline is the hard constraint.
