The Aug. 19 inflow, the largest since April, came as the basis trade widened. MSTR now holds $4.8B cash; CME futures expiry on Aug. 30 is next.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs posted a net inflow of $517.2 million on Aug. 19, the strongest single-day total since late April, data from Coinidol show. The reversal came after weeks of mixed flows and a period of basis trade compression.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust accounted for $284.7 million of the haul, extending its lead as the largest ETF vehicle. Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund also saw steady additions, though at a smaller scale.
The buying wave coincided with a widening of the premium between Bitcoin spot prices and near-term Chicago Mercantile Exchange futures. That spread, known as the basis, is the engine of the hedge fund "cash-and-carry" trade. Institutional desks short CME futures and buy spot exposure – often through the ETFs – to lock in a near-risk-free return. When the basis widens, more capital enters the spot market through these vehicles.
A separate but related move came from Strategy Inc., the corporate Bitcoin holder formerly known as MicroStrategy (MSTR). The company holds 840,447 BTC, the largest corporate stash, and recently sold a portion of its coins to shore up its capital structure. The sales lifted its cash reserve to $4.8 billion, a buffer for its variable-rate perpetual preferred stock. Strategy Inc. has described the strategy as a way to manage debt obligations without abandoning accumulation. MSTR carries an Alpha Score of 26 out of 100, a Weak label, because of its high leverage and dependence on Bitcoin's price.
CME Group, which lists the Bitcoin futures used in the basis trade, has an Alpha Score of 59, Moderate. The exchange's Bitcoin futures open interest has risen in recent sessions, suggesting renewed institutional activity.
The risk for the market is that the basis trade can reverse quickly. If the premium narrows, desks unwind their positions, selling the spot ETFs and buying back the futures. That can produce sharp outflows, as seen in June and July. For now, the basis remains wide enough to support continued inflows, traders said.
Strategy Inc. now holds $4.8 billion in cash, positioning it to resume Bitcoin accumulation once its preferred shares return to par.
