Bank of Baroda confirmed a data leak after a hacker claimed 1TB of data. The lender says a compromised employee email, not core banking systems, was the source.
Bank of Baroda on Monday confirmed that customer data was exposed in a breach, blaming the incident on a compromised employee email account rather than a penetration of its core banking systems.
The public sector lender released its first official response after a hacker claimed to have leaked 1 terabyte of data allegedly tied to the bank, including customer information and internal records. The bank said the data accessed was limited.
"The incident involved compromise of an employee's email account, resulting in unauthorised access to certain data. The matter was promptly identified, and immediate containment measures were implemented. The Bank's core banking systems were not accessed and continue to remain secure," Bank of Baroda said in a statement.
The bank said it has started a forensic investigation and is working with authorities under applicable regulatory requirements. The inquiry aims to establish the full scope of the breach and determine appropriate remedial measures.
"The Bank has initiated a comprehensive forensic investigation to thoroughly examine the matter and is working closely with the relevant authorities in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements," the statement added.
An email account breach typically exposes correspondence, attachments, and potentially credentials. It does not directly reach transaction databases or customer account balances, which sit on separate core banking infrastructure. The distinction matters for assessing the practical risk to depositors and borrowers.
Bank of Baroda did not say how many customers were affected, what specific data types were exposed, or who the hacker or group behind the leak is. Those details may emerge from the forensic investigation.
Shares of Bank of Baroda closed little changed on Monday. The stock has fallen about 8% this year, roughly in line with the Nifty Bank index, as Indian financial stocks have broadly tracked the broader market's performance.
