As X Falters, Can Bluesky Break Out of Its U.S.-Centric Shell?

User dissatisfaction with X's controversies is driving migration to Bluesky, but the platform's U.S.-centric user base poses a long-term challenge.

The ongoing decline of X, formerly Twitter, under its new ownership has accelerated dramatically, with recent controversies including the platform becoming a vector for non-consensual AI-generated pornography, some involving minors. This sustained degradation is prompting a significant user exodus, with many migrating to alternative platforms like Bluesky. While Bluesky has benefited from this influx of disaffected users, the platform now faces a critical challenge: it remains overwhelmingly dominated by American voices and perspectives. To fulfill its potential as a true global public square and avoid becoming an echo chamber, Bluesky must actively work to burst its own 'American bubble' and foster a more geographically diverse community. The platform's future relevance may depend on its ability to achieve this international expansion.
