A crypto analyst is drawing a line between the June market sell-off and the March 2020 crash, calling for a massive altcoin recovery.
Matthew Hyland told his followers on August 21 that the June downturn was an altcoin replay of the pandemic-era collapse. If the parallel holds, he said, certain tokens could deliver returns of 10x to 1000x from their June lows.
“IMO you will see 10x-1000x returns from the maximum opportunity over the past few months the same way you did from the March 2020 prices,” Hyland wrote.
The comparison rests on recovery speed, not specific price targets. Hyland pointed to the S&P 500, which took roughly 13 weeks to reclaim its March 2025 low by June 2025. He expects a similar timeline for altcoins.
“I don’t know when but when it does start it won’t take years, it will be just a few months,” he said.
Other traders have echoed the bullish tone. CrediBULL Crypto said the latest price action confirmed a macro bottom, putting Bitcoin on track toward $100,000 and Ethereum (ETH) above $3,500. Sykodelic pointed to Bitcoin’s break above its 200-day SMA as a trigger, citing post-break rallies of 124% in 2019, 724% in 2020, and 511% in 2023. Sykodelic attached a condition: a fall below $65,000 would invalidate the call.
Bitcoin was trading above $76,000 at the time of writing, up nearly 9% over 24 hours and more than 19% over the past week. Ethereum was near $2,400, up 5% on the day and 26% on the week. Some altcoins moved faster. XRP was around $1.32, up almost 18% in one day and about 29% in seven days. Bitcoin Cash rose 18% over 24 hours. Dogecoin added 12%.
The rally traces back to Wednesday, when Bitcoin jumped from the low $60,000s past $70,000 and eventually to its highest level since May. The move was helped by the U.S. Treasury doubling the size of its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated government debt and a White House meeting where President Donald Trump pushed for the CLARITY Act and floated additional government Bitcoin purchases.
Hyland expects the next leg to bring more attention to altcoins. In his view, the recovery could become “the most hated rally in Crypto history” because many traders had concluded that crypto was finished.
