Altcoin market cap surged $215B (24%) Aug 19-22, pushing Total2 above $1T. 56% of Binance altcoins reclaimed their 200-day MA after Trump's crypto-friendly announcements.
Altcoin market capitalization jumped $215 billion between Aug. 19 and Aug. 22, a 24% surge that pushed the Total2 metric – total crypto market cap excluding Bitcoin – back above $1 trillion for the first time in months.
The rally followed a series of statements by President Trump on Aug. 19. Trump said the United States would buy large amounts of Bitcoin, urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act to establish clearer crypto rules, and claimed his administration had ended what he called the war on crypto, according to a summary by crypto analyst Darkfost.
Before the announcements, the altcoin market had been under pressure. Darkfost said 80% to 85% of altcoins listed on Binance had traded below their 200-day moving average since November, reflecting extended weakness. After the rally, 56% of tracked altcoins reclaimed that level, he said.
Crypto trader Kyren pointed to the 200-day moving average as a key threshold. Altcoins had been trading an average of 11% below it before the move. Kyren said a similar reclaim in 2021 preceded a sixfold rally into that cycle’s peak.
The gains were concentrated in mid- and small-cap tokens, which react faster to sentiment shifts because of lower liquidity. Thin trading volumes before Aug. 19 had left many tokens undervalued relative to recent ranges, analysts said. Darkfost described the short-term gain as an intermediate signal of an early alt season.
The Clarity Act remains before Congress. No vote has been scheduled.
