Altcoins added $215B in three days after Trump's White House summit. Total2 recaptured $1T. Bitcoin dominance near 60% keeps altseason question open.
Altcoins added roughly $215 billion in market value between August 19 and August 22, one of the strongest short-term advances of the year. The Total2 metric, which strips Bitcoin from total crypto market cap, climbed more than 24% over the three days and recaptured the $1 trillion threshold. Mid-cap and smaller tokens led the move, reversing months of weak relative momentum against BTC.
The rally followed Donald Trump's August 19 White House summit with crypto executives, regulators and financial-industry representatives. Trump used the event to press Congress to advance digital-asset legislation, calling for a "fair version" of the CLARITY Act, Reuters reported. Bitcoin subsequently broke above $70,000 for the first time since June, and the broader advance spread into higher-beta cryptocurrencies.
The rebound has shifted the technical picture beneath headline market-cap numbers. According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, roughly 80% to 85% of Binance-listed altcoins had traded below their 200-day moving averages during the prolonged weakness that began last November. More than half have now recovered above that level. Such breadth can be an early sign of capital rotation beyond the largest cryptocurrencies. Historically, an altcoin season is defined by sustained outperformance across a broad set of non-Bitcoin assets, not isolated rallies in a handful of tokens.
The move hasn't cleared the market's more demanding confirmation signals. Bitcoin dominance remains a caution flag. At roughly 59.7% on August 23, BTC continued to account for a large share of total crypto capitalization. Traders typically look for a deeper and sustained decline in Bitcoin's market share before declaring a broad rotation into smaller assets.
The market has also begun cooling after the three-day surge. Total crypto capitalization fell about 5.5% over the subsequent 24 hours to roughly $2.57 trillion. That leaves the rally in an intermediate position: market breadth has improved substantially, neither Bitcoin dominance nor the Altcoin Season Index confirms a full altseason.
Policy could provide the next major catalyst. The Senate postponed consideration of the CLARITY Act until September after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement before the August recess. A procedural test expected around September 15 could determine whether regulatory optimism extends the rotation, or whether the latest altcoin surge remains another sharp but temporary rebound.
